Damaged asbestos is a serious problem, and should be dealt with by trained people. Asbestos in good condition is less of an issue but you need to be fully informed, as you are not going to want to drill or sand or knock nails into asbestos products. Ideally it should be removed, and if this is done it MUST be done by trained professionals.
Ignorant..It is called air o cell type insulation….cardboard paper impregnated with asbestos fibers….THE most common type of asbestos insulation in houses…..

LOL, this particular pipe was insulated with cardboard…not asbestos. Mind you though, lots of hot water pipes are insulated with asbestos, so take care when handling them…or better, DON’T handle them. Usually the loosely bound type of asbestos is used.
This is pretty informative.
